Troubleshooting Guide

Installation Issues

Problem: Can't download or install GenogramApp

  1. Check iOS version: Ensure your device meets the minimum iOS requirements (check the App Store listing)
  2. Check storage: Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage to ensure you have enough space
  3. Restart your device: A simple restart often resolves installation issues
  4. Check App Store: Make sure you're signed in with your Apple ID
  5. Network connection: Verify you have a stable internet connection

If issues persist, try downloading a different free app first to ensure App Store is working properly.

Problem: App crashes on launch or during use

  1. Force quit the app: Swipe up from the bottom (or double-click home button), then swipe GenogramApp up
  2. Restart your device: Hold power button and slide to power off, then turn back on
  3. Update iOS: Go to Settings → General → Software Update
  4. Reinstall the app: Delete GenogramApp, restart your device, then reinstall from the App Store

Note: Your data is stored locally. If you reinstall, all the genograms and data will be deleted as well.

In-App Purchase Issues

Problem: Purchase not working or not restored

  1. Check your Apple ID: Ensure you're signed in with the same Apple ID used for the purchase
  2. Restore purchases: Look for a "Restore Purchases" button in the app's settings or purchase screen
  3. Wait a few minutes: Sometimes purchases take a moment to process
  4. Check purchase history: Settings → [Your Name] → Media & Purchases → Purchase History to confirm the transaction

If you were charged but didn't receive the features, contact us with your purchase receipt, and we'll help resolve it.

Problem: Charged twice or unexpected charge

All purchases are processed through Apple. To resolve billing issues:

  1. Check your purchase history in Settings → [Your Name] → Media & Purchases
  2. If you see an unauthorized charge, report a problem to Apple
  3. Contact Apple Support directly for refund requests

We don't process payments directly, but we're happy to help verify purchase status on our end if needed.

Export and Import Issues

Problem: Cannot export genogram

  1. Check permissions: Ensure GenogramApp has permission to access your files (Settings → GenogramApp → Allow Access)
  2. Check storage: Make sure your device has enough free space
  3. Try a different format: If one export format fails, try another
  4. Restart the app: Force quit and reopen GenogramApp

Problem: Cannot import genogram file

  1. Check file format: Ensure the file is in a supported format
  2. Verify file integrity: If the file was transferred from another device, ensure it wasn't corrupted
  3. Check password: If the file is password-protected, ensure you're entering the correct password
  4. File location: Make sure the file is accessible in your Files app

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I create my first genogram?

  1. Open GenogramApp and tap the "+" or "New Genogram" button
  2. Give your genogram a name (e.g., "Smith Family," "Client A")
  3. Start by adding the primary person or index person (the person at the center of the family tree)
  4. Tap on the person node to add details like name, age, birth date, and other information
  5. Use the "Add Relationship" button to connect family members
  6. Continue building out the family structure by adding parents, siblings, spouses, and children

Pro Tip: Start with the oldest generation (grandparents) and work your way down. This helps maintain a clear visual hierarchy in your genogram.

What's the best order for adding family members?

For the clearest and most organized genogram, we recommend this workflow:

  1. Add parents first: Before adding children, create both parent nodes
  2. Create couple relationships: Connect the parents with a marriage/partnership relationship
  3. Then add children: Once parents are connected, add children to the couple
  4. Add spouses for grown children: If children are married, add their spouses before adding grandchildren

Why this order? Creating parents and spouse relationships before adding children helps the app's layout engine position nodes more naturally and prevents overlapping or misaligned connections.

Where do I find app settings?

GenogramApp settings can be found in two places:

  • In-app settings: Tap the gear icon ⚙️ in the app (usually in the top navigation or main menu)
  • iOS Settings: Go to your device Settings → scroll down to find GenogramApp for system-level permissions

In settings, you can adjust:

  • Display preferences (text size, color schemes)
  • iCloud sync settings
  • Export/import options
  • Privacy and data management

How do I export my genograms?

  1. Open the genogram you want to export
  2. Tap the Share or Export button (usually in the top menu)
  3. Choose your export format (PDF, image, or GenogramApp file)
  4. If using password protection (Pro feature), enter a password
  5. Select where to save or share your file (Files app, email, messaging, etc.)

Export formats explained:

  • PDF: Best for printing or sharing with others who don't have the app
  • Image (PNG/JPG): For presentations or including in documents
  • GenogramApp file: For backing up or sharing with other GenogramApp users (preserves all data and editing capability)

How do I import a genogram?

  1. Make sure you have a GenogramApp file (.genogram or app-specific format)
  2. In GenogramApp, tap the Import button on the main screen
  3. Navigate to your file in the Files app
  4. Select the file to import
  5. If the file is password-protected, enter the password
  6. The genogram will appear in your library

Note: You can only import files that were exported from GenogramApp. PDF and image exports cannot be re-imported as editable genograms.

Is my data synced across devices?

GenogramApp stores data locally on your device. There is no syncing between devices. However, with the Pro subscription, you can share editable genograms and open them on another device.

For more details about data storage and privacy, see our Privacy Policy.

Can I use GenogramApp offline?

Yes! GenogramApp works completely offline. All your genograms are stored locally on your device, so you don't need an internet connection to:

  • Create new genograms
  • Edit existing genograms
  • View your genogram library
  • Export genograms

Internet is only needed for in-app purchases.

How do I delete a genogram?

  1. Go to your genogram library (main screen)
  2. Find the genogram you want to delete
  3. Swipe left on the genogram or long-press to reveal options
  4. Tap Delete
  5. Confirm deletion

Warning: Deletion is permanent. If iCloud sync is enabled, the genogram will be deleted from all your devices. Consider exporting important genograms before deleting them.

What's the difference between free and Pro features?

GenogramApp offers core functionality for free, with Pro features available via in-app purchase:

Free features include:

  • Create unlimited genograms
  • Add up to 10 family members and relationships
  • Basic editing and customization
  • Export to PDF or PNG format.

Pro features include:

  • All features of the free version.
  • Export editable genogram, to .genogram file format.
  • Password-protected exports for client confidentiality (optional)
